Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning
What is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a method of exfoliation that consists of using a 10 gauge scalpel to gently scrape off the top layer of dulling dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother, brighter complexion.
Sounds scary, right? It really isn’t, as long as you’re in the right hands.
Dermaplaning is a favorite in the entertainment industry, specifically among models and actresses. Why? It also eliminates that annoying peach fuzz that cakes up in makeup and can be enhanced by harsh production lighting and high-definition cameras. Dermaplaning additionally allows for greater penetration of skincare products and creates a flawless canvas for makeup to glide on smoothly. In fact, cosmetic dermatologists often use dermaplaning to help prepare skin for more intrusive procedures such as laser treatments and chemical peels.
Wondering if you should try dermaplaning versus microdermabrasion?
They are both forms of physical exfoliation, but the methods are very different. Microdermabrasion sands and suctions dead skin cells, which also helps to uproot clogged pores around the nose, mouth and chin. Dermaplaning safely scrapes off the top layer of skin, so it is well suited for drier skin types and anyone who wants to get rid of peach fuzz. But, keep in mind, both methods are good for almost everyone and it could just boil down to your personal preference.

Microdermabrasion
A less aggressive approach than dermabrasion, microdermabrasion treatments make use of a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand the skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer.
Microdermabrasion is used to treat light scarring, discoloration and sun damage, and can be used to lessen the appearance of stretch marks, among other conditions.

Chemical Peels
What is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical Peels are used to improve the appearance of the skin. Chemical Peels can be done to both the face and body. A chemical solution is applied to the ski, causing it to exfoliate and eventually peel away/ The new, regenerated skin is smoother, some pigment and fine lines are reduced.
Chemical Peels treat:
- Acne scars
- Aging skin
- Crows feet
- Hyperpigmentation
- Melasma
- Sun damaged skin
- Wrinkles
We offer three levels of Chemical Peels:
- Superficial or “lunchtime” peel: Mild exfoliants penetrate only the outer layer of skin for gentle exfoliation. This peel is used to improve the appearance of mild discoloration and rough skin, as well as to refresh the skin.
- Medium peel: Stronger exfoliants are applied to the skin to penetrate the outer and middle layers of the skin to remove damaged skin cells. This peel is used to improve age spots, fine line and wrinkles, freckles and moderate skin discoloration. It also smooths rough skin and can treat some precancerous skin growths such as actinic keratosis.
- Deep peel: The strongest exfoliants are applied to the skin to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment improves moderate lines and wrinkles, age spots, freckles and shallow scars. Patients will see a dramatic improvement in their skin’s appearance.
Are Chemical Peels Painful?
Chemical peels sting, but do not cause a great deal of pain. You may experience stinging, redness, irritation, and crusting, but as the skin begins to adjust all these problems will subside.
What can I expect after having a Chemical Peel?
All peels require some follow-up care:
- Superficial peels require one to seven days to heal. Treated skin will initially be red and may flake. Chemical-free mineral sunscreen should be applied until the skin heals. We highly recommend eltaMD sunscreen, which we have available for purchase at our practice. Makeup can usually be worn the next day.
- Medium peels require seven to 14 days to heal. Treated skin will initially be red and swollen. Swelling worsens for the first 48 hours. Skin crusts and peels off in seven to 14 days. Skin must be cared for daily for a specified period, followed by ointment application. We highly recommend Stratacel by Stratpharma, which we have available for purchase at our practice, to aid in the healing process. Avoid all sun exposure until healing is complete. Chemical-free mineral sunscreen should be applied until the skin heals. Makeup may be worn after five to seven days. A follow-up appointment or communication will be necessary to monitor progress.
- Deep peels require 14 to 21 days to heal. The treated area will be bandaged. Skin must be cared for daily for a specified period, followed by ointment application for the first 14 days. We highly recommend Stratacel by Stratpharma, which we have available for purchase at our practice, to aid in the healing process. Avoid all sun exposure until healing is complete. Chemical-free mineral sunscreen should be applied until the skin heals. Afterwards a thick mild moisturizer is applied for the following 14 days. Avoid all sun exposure for three to six months. If necessary, makeup may be worn after 14 days. Follow-up appointments or communication will be necessary to monitor progress.
Who is not a candidate for a chemical peel?
Chemical peels are not recommended for individuals with infection, active skin diseases, cut or broken skin, sunburns, or active Herpes simplex 1 sores. Other counter-indications include patients who are:
- Nursing or pregnant
- Have taken Accutane in the last six months
- Have psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, or rosacea
- Have used Retin A, Renova, prescription skin care products, products that contain ascorbic acid, bleaching or skin-lightening agents or other acid-based products in the last 48 hours.
* Sun exposure and smoking after a chemical peel must be avoided because they can cause unwanted side effects, including infection and scarring.

MicroNeedling
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks.
How does Microneedling work?
Microneedling works by encouraging your skin to produce more collagen. The idea is that pinpricks from the procedure cause slight injury to the dermis of the skin and the skin responds by creating new collagen-rich tissue.
This new skin tissue is, in turn, more even in tone and texture. It’s normal for the skin to lose collagen via age or injury, our natural collagen production starts to slow by the age of 25. By encouraging the skin to make new tissue, there may be more collagen to help make the skin firmer, too.
What to expect during your treatment?
During the procedure, your technician makes small pricks into the skin, creating channels, with a pen-like microneedling device. The pinpricks are so small that you likely won’t notice them after the procedure. Your technician will move the tool evenly across your skin so that the new skin that rejuvenates will be even, too.
Before getting started, a topical anesthetic will be applied to reduce the chances of pain. This is done 20 minutes before your treatment.
After your treatment, a serum or calming treatment will be applied. In total, you can expect to be at the practice for about an hour.
Microneedling is used to treat:
- acne scars
- age spots / sun spots
- fine lines and wrinkles
- large pores
- other types of scars
- reduced skin elasticity
- uneven skin tone
In addition to treating facial concerns, microneedling is may be used to treat stretch marks and scarring on other areas of the body.
Safety
Microneedling is minimally invasive, requiring little to no down-time. The treatment is considered safe for most people. You may experience minor redness and irritation for a few days after the treatment.
Convenience
- Total prep and procedure time is about an hour.
- Little to no down-time
- You may need at least multiple treatments for the best result.
Efficacy
- It’s considered effective in treating minor scarring related to acne, wounds, and aging. You’ll notice brighter, firmer skin, too.
- Ideal results are achieved after multiple sessions.
- Professional microneedling is far more effective than at-home rollers.
