“Unlocking the Fountain of Youth: A Guide to Preventive Skincare and Advanced Treatments – From Cleansing Rituals to Laser Magic!”
While we’re young, when it comes to skincare, our focus should be on prevention and establishing a solid skincare routine that forms the foundation for healthy skin. After our early 20’s, our body’s natural skin-firming proteins and collagen start decreasing at a rate of about 1% per year… that’s just naturally… throwing things like smoking, partying, poor skin and body care, and environmental factors in to the mix increases the rate.
Adopting healthy living habits and curating an appropriate skincare routine and treatment plan that you’ll be able to be consistent with, is important.
Establishing a good skincare routine during your youth is crucial for maintaining healthy and vibrant skin in the long run. A comprehensive routine includes cleansing, exfoliating, nourishing, moisturizing, and sun protection. To up the ante, incorporating advanced professional treatments can give a jump-start on prevention.
At-Home Skincare:
1. Cleansing: Begin with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type, whether it’s oily, dry, or combination. Cleanse twice daily to remove impurities, makeup, and excess oil. On the days you wear makeup, double cleanse. A great cleanser for normal to combination skin-types is BeautySmart Skincare’s Clear It All Cleanser ($35, available in our office and at beautysmartskincare.com), and for oily to acneic skin-types we recommend BeautySmart Skincare’s Pore Out Cleanser ($35, available in our office and at beautysmartskincare.com).
2. Exfoliation: Regular exfoliation helps to slough off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover and revealing a fresh complexion. Use chemical exfoliants like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) for a more effective and gentle exfoliation, to keep your skin smooth and clear. We recommend BeautySmart Skincare’s FourWay Exfoliating Cleanser ($35, available at BeautySmart Medical Spa and at beautysmartskincare.com), and Enzyme the Grime, for body, too! ($40, available at BeautySmart Medical Spa and at beautysmartskincare.com)
3. Antioxidants: Incorporate products with antioxidants like vitamin C and E into your routine. These brighten, promote collagen production. They combat UV-damage and help neutralize free radicals, that cause damage to cells and create oxidative stress, boht which contribute to poor skin health later in life. Our favorite serum for this is our Vital-C Serum ($70, available at BeautySmart Medical Spa and online at beautysmartskincare.com).
4. Moisturizing: Hydration is key for youthful skin. Use a moisturizer that suits your skin’s needs to maintain a healthy moisture balance. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin are excellent choices.
For all skin-types, including oily-types, we recommend BeautySmart Skincare’s Acqua Essence HA Serum ($70, available at BeautySmart Medical Spa and online at beautysmartskincare.com), for normal to drier skin-types, we recommend Aloe Me to Calm Crème ($80, available at BeautySmart Medical Spa and online at beautysmartskincare.com)
For additional hydration and optimal results, you can layer the two in serum-then-crème order.
5. Sun Protection: Sunscreen is a crucial step in preventing premature aging. Use a high-quality, low-to-no-chemical broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, especially on days you’re in the sun. This may seem tedious now, but it really helps prevent sun damage, including fine lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation down the road. The Tizo line of sun care is our go-to ($ varies, available at BeautySmart Medical Spa).
Professional Treatments:
• Chemical Peels: Chemical peels exfoliate the skin by applying a chemical solution to remove the outer layer, revealing smoother, more youthful skin. They can help with fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. It’s best to have these done professionally to avoid damaging the skin, rather than improving it. It’s important to consult before being treated, and to make sure you’re being treated by a professional who really knows what they’re doing, to decide the right type and strength of peel, for you.
• Laser Treatments: Laser treatments can address various skin concerns, including pigmentation, fine lines, and acne scars. They work by stimulating collagen production and promoting skin renewal. Opt for something such as IPL, which help clear up residual acne and/or sun damage.
• Mild Skin Resurfacing Treatments: Procedures like microdermabrasion or microneedling can enhance skin texture and tone. These treatments stimulate collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and help to prevent them.
• Preventative tox: Tox injections ~ like Botox and Dysport ~ relaxes the facial muscles reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When started early, tox can be preventative, relaxing the muscles earlier-on and preventing the fine lines and wrinkles from forming to begin with. Preventative -tox, be it Botox or Dysport, especially in areas prone to expression lines like the forehead and around the eyes, or if you’re genetically predisposed to deep wrinkles.
Other Important Lifestyle Habits:
• Avoid excessive sun exposure, but don’t nix it altogether (Vitamin D is still important!).
• Avoid eating excess sugar (but still treat yourself and don’t beat yourself up for it!)
• Increase your water intake.
• Think about adding a collagen supplement to your daily routine.
Building an appropriate skincare routine and sticking to it consistently is key to allowing your skin to adapt to the products and treatments, maximizing their effectiveness over time.
Remember, everyone’s skin is unique, so it’s essential to tailor your skincare routine and treatments to your specific needs. Consulting with a knowledgeable professional can provide personalized recommendations based on your skin type, concerns, and goals.
