What Causes Cellulite?
The causes of cellulite are not well understood, but there are several theories that have been put forth as explanations. Among these are:
Hormonal factors. Hormones are believed to play an important role in cellulite development.
Decreased Blood Flow. Reduced blood flow can be a genetic predisposition or toxicity that results in lymphatic build-up and decreased removal of toxins and delivery of nutrients.
Dysfunctional Collagen Net. A dysfunctional collagen net is often related to a genetic predisposition. The condition causes even the slightest subcutaneous fat to push through causing ripples and dimples.
Subcutaneous Fat. A build up of subcutaneous fat will intensify the appearance of cellulite.
Diet. Excess consumption of processed foods, artificial sweeteners and low intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats can contribute to the development and appearance of cellulite.
Types Of Cellulite
Grade 1 – cellulite sees no clinical symptoms, but a microscopic examination of cells from the area detects underlying anatomical changes.
Grade 2 – cellulite requires the skin to show pallor, be lower temperature, and have decreased elasticity.
Grade 3 – cellulite has visible roughness of the skin (like an orange peel).
Although cellulite can affect both sexes, it is much more common in females.
